José María Grajeda was an herbalist who made himself out to be a doctor. He had a stall in the marketplace, where his cries alternated with those of the Chinese fruit and vegetable sellers. Puig thinks his jealousy of the immigrants was rooted in the reputation for reliability enjoyed by the remedies they sold. The fact is, we know almost nothing of him: it is not even certain Grajeda was a member of the Maderista army before the taking of Torreón. He could just have been some infuriated local on horseback. No one knows why he hated the Chinese.
